At a pivotal moment in the institution's history, Mark Walhimer led the transformation of the Museum of Arts and Sciences into a dynamic hub at the crossroads of art, science, and community engagement. The museum had long served as a traditional regional institution, but required bold restructuring to evolve into a vibrant, future-facing organization.
Museum Planning LLC partnered with Wonderspaces, bringing national-caliber immersive experiences to central Georgia for the first time. Working closely with the Knight Foundation, the team developed sustainable frameworks for community-centric programming and digital engagement.
New interactive exhibits and STEAM-based educational programs for all ages were launched, aligning with national standards in informal science learning. The engagement introduced cross-disciplinary visitor experience techniques that combine makerspaces, traditional museum experiences, and design thinking.
The museum's first comprehensive HR system was designed and implemented, including payroll modernization, performance evaluation, and onboarding protocols. A reorganized staffing structure with diverse new staff and redefined roles increased accountability, equity, and operational clarity.
The museum was repositioned as a civic platform, emphasizing shared histories and local identity — including inclusive storytelling around Georgia's cultural landscape. Outreach efforts to underrepresented communities were expanded through programming, hiring practices, and partnerships.
