Museum Planning LLC developed the exhibition and visitor experience design for Alcatraz Landing — the point of arrival for the thousands of visitors who make the ferry crossing to Alcatraz Island each day. The design work focused on setting the tone for the Alcatraz experience from the moment visitors step off the boat.
Alcatraz Landing is both a logistical gateway and an experiential threshold. The design work engaged this dual role — creating a space that orients, intrigues, and prepares visitors for the island experience while managing the practical demands of high-volume visitor flow.
The interpretive design drew on the layered histories of Alcatraz — federal penitentiary, Native American occupation, military installation, and natural refuge — introducing these threads at the landing in ways that deepen the island visit that follows.
